Second Serving
Artist statement:
In Ancient Greece and during the Renaissance, the dining table was a site of performance. By the 1940s, table setting had become competitive in suburban homes, and in the 1960s, British designer David Hicks coined the term "tablescape." Today, the trend continues on social media, where a perfectly styled table is still a symbol of taste, culture, and influence. While visually striking, curated tables are often fueled by homeware trends and overconsumption, similar to that of fast fashion.
Second Serving offers a slower kind of styling. Thrifted crockery, cutlery, and napkins are arranged and photographed, then exposed using the cyanotype process. Each composition plays with ideas of taste, ritual, and reuse. These imprints of domestic life showcase the beauty and possibility of a thrifted tablescape. Second Serving also draws attention to the rich histories embedded in pre-loved objects - reminding us how food and gathering connects us across time.
